Phishing

Fraudulent e-mails can be sent over the Internet. These e-mails may ask the recipient to click on various bogus links to Monroe Bank & Trust "websites" asking you for personal information such as Social Security numbers and account numbers.  These attempts to gain your personal information are known as "phishing". Do not click on the links or respond to the messages. Doing so may cause you to be redirected to a fraudulent site.

Protect Yourself

You can take the following actions to protect yourself from phishers:

  • Never reveal your user id and password to anyone via e-mail. This is true for ALL websites.
  •  Change your password regularly.
  •  Choose passwords that are difficult for others to guess and that are not easily tied back to you (the name of your business or spouse, for example).
  •  Protect your PC with a personal firewall. Many operating systems now have them built-in, while older machines can be protected with third-party products.
  • If an email from an unknown - or unsolicited - sender contains an attachment of any kind, do not open it. Delete the email immediately.
  • If you do end up on a Website and you believe to not be legitimate, navigate away from it immediately.
  • Visit the Website by manually typing the Web address for the organization's home page.
  • Never hesitate to confirm that an email was actually sent to you from Monroe Bank & Trust.  Simply contact our Customer Service Center at 800-321-0032.
  • Educate yourself on the resources available to you regarding phishing.
Monroe Bank & Trust will never request personal information such as Social Security numbers, account numbers, user IDs, PINs or passwords via e-mail, telephone or by fax.
